Kevin John Richman was born in Albany, New York, and raised by his loving and supportive parents alongside an older brother he has always admired. His family relocated to Long Island during his high school years due to his father’s work, an experience that reinforced the value of close family bonds and learning from those you admire. Named in honor of his father, Kevin often includes the "J" in his signature as a tribute to the man who has been a guiding force in his life.
Coming from a family deeply rooted in education, Kevin was profoundly influenced by his father, a retired superintendent, his uncle, a current superintendent, and his aunt, a retired principal. Their collective dedication to education instilled in him a deep appreciation for the transformative power of teaching and leadership, inspiring him to pursue a career committed to making a lasting impact on students and communities.
Kevin’s journey in education began at Camp A.N.C.H.O.R. (Answering the Needs of Citizens with Handicaps Through Organized Recreation) in Lido Beach, NY, where he spent 15 years creating meaningful experiences for individuals with disabilities. These early experiences shaped his belief in inclusive education and laid the foundation for his professional path.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University and a Bachelor of Science in Inclusive Elementary and Special Education from the School of Education at Syracuse University. Kevin then pursued a Master of Arts in Multiple and Severe Disabilities at Teachers College, Columbia University, graduating with honors in 2006. His academic achievements culminated in a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Educational Leadership and Administration from The College of Saint Rose in 2012.
Kevin began his teaching career as a special education teacher at Lynbrook South Middle School, serving for three years before transitioning to Long Beach High School, where he taught for four years. During this time, he developed programs tailored to the unique needs of his students, blending compassion with innovation in his approach to education. He also gained leadership experience as a Substitute Dean of Discipline, broadening his administrative expertise.
In 2013, Kevin moved into administration as an assistant principal at Newfield High School in the Middle Country School District on Long Island. During this time, he also served as Principal of the Extended School Year Program and Co-Director of the Alternative Learning Center.
In 2017, Kevin relocated upstate to become the Principal of Binghamton High School, a role he has proudly held for eight years. Under his leadership, the school has seen an increase in its graduation rate, reflecting his unwavering focus on academic achievement and fostering a sense of community. He firmly believes in the power of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to drive collaboration, improve instruction, and support all students in reaching their potential. He frequently emphasizes the importance of creating a rigorous yet supportive environment where students and staff feel safe, valued, and inspired.
In recent years, Kevin has expanded his work into the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence in education. He has been presenting across New York State, sharing insights on how administrators can effectively leverage AI to enhance productivity and decision-making. Additionally, he has collaborated with two colleagues to deliver workshops focused on integrating AI into classroom instruction, empowering students and educators to utilize cutting-edge technology to enrich learning experiences. These efforts reflect Kevin’s commitment to staying at the forefront of educational innovation and equipping schools with tools to prepare students for the future.
Kevin recently completed the Superintendent Development Program at SUNY Oswego, an experience that significantly broadened his perspective on educational leadership. This program challenged him to move beyond the focus of building-level administration to embrace the complexities of leading an entire district. He now approaches leadership with a deeper understanding of how to align a district's vision, resources, and initiatives to drive systemic growth and success. This transformative experience has further strengthened his ability to inspire and guide educational communities toward shared goals.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Kevin is actively involved in educational organizations and initiatives. He co-chairs the Broome-Tioga Principals Consortium and has been a member since 2017. He is also a member of the School Administrators Association of New York State (SAANYS) and previously served with the Council of Administrators and Supervisors. His academic honors include induction into Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society in education, and recognition as a Research Fellow at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Serving on the Board of Directors for the Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier (MHAST) has been a profoundly rewarding experience. MHAST is dedicated to enhancing the mental health of all community residents through advocacy, education, and support. Collaborating with fellow board members and staff, Kevin has contributed to initiatives that align with MHAST's mission, striving to improve the quality of mental health services and promote wellness throughout the community. This role has deepened his understanding of mental health challenges and reinforced his commitment to fostering environments where individuals can access the resources and support they need.
Kevin’s work is guided by a belief that greatness comes from collaboration, communication, and a relentless commitment to improvement. His dedication to education is matched by his pride in his community and his ongoing efforts to create a positive school culture. He looks forward to continuing to serve as a leader, learner, and advocate for the transformative power of education.
